Smart Metering

A smart meter is an electronic device that as a minimum records consumption of electric energy in intervals of an hour or less and communicates that information at least daily back to the utility for monitoring and billing.
Smart meters enable two-way communication between the meter and the central system.  Communications from the meter to the network may be via fixed wired connections or wirelessly.
Wired communications options include power line carrier (PLC).
There are many wireless communication options in common use including:
169Mhz (SubGhz network), cellular communications, Wi-Fi (readily available), low power long range wireless (LORA), ZigBee (low power low data rate wireless) etc.
